U.S. Forest Facts and Figures

The United States has some of the most productive, diverse forestlands in the world, and you can view much of the most current data available about those forests right here. Much of the data were published by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and Clemson University in U.S. Forests Facts & Figures, 2001. This website and the U.S. Forests Facts & Figures, 2001 publication may represent the most comprehensive, concise statistical data set available on the forests of the United States. The information is updated every five years as the US Forest Service releases their most recent forest inventory data.

U.S. Forests Facts & Figures, 2001 embodies a synthesis of information gathered from private sources and government agencies. Great lengths were taken to ensure thoroughness and accuracy. We believe you will find the information presented here, and in the publication, in an intuitive and easy-to-understand manner.

Furthermore, in hopes of providing a more complete understanding of our forests nationwide, we have complemented statistical information with insightful commentary. Throughout this section of our website and in the U.S. Forests Facts & Figures, 2001 publication, you will find a discussion on the history, geography and diverse properties of America's many types of forests.

Additionally, these data offer a broad perspective on the relationship between people and our forests. We provide insight on who owns our forests, how they are managed, and which lands have been set-aside for non-commercial use.

The forests in this country are among the healthiest, most abundant and most productive in the world. We take great pride in that fact. Our forests provide clean water, clean air, diverse wildlife habitats and recreation opportunities for all. But don't take our word for it. The numbers shown on this website and in the U.S. Forests Facts & Figures, 2001 publication speak for themselves!
