American Wood Council (AWC)

Manager, Building Codes and Regulations

Reports to:      Vice President, Codes and Regulations

 

 

 

 

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Protect present markets for lumber, engineered wood products, panels, and other wood products, and develop new market opportunities through elimination or revision of unjustified building codes, standards, and regulations, which unduly restrict the use of wood construction.
  • Provide management and technical support to Association staff and allied groups on green building initiatives.
  • Defend and achieve acceptance of wood products by regulatory officials, designers, and builders by developing or initiating development of credible performance data and technical information on lumber and wood construction.
  • Broaden wood use and assure continued product acceptance by providing general code, design, and use information to code bodies, government agencies, and other user groups.
  • Provide engineering interpretations and other technical assistance to designers, regulators, and wood products companies.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities To:

Membership

  • Participate, as needed, on calls and in meetings of the Association membership.
  • Provide updates on current activities to Association members upon request.

Vice President, Codes and Regulations

  • Provide timely and regular written communication on activities and outcomes resulting from engagement at the local, regional, state, and federal level on issues of importance to the industry.
  • Participate in periodic meetings of staff and provide reports to others on activities in the assigned region.
  • Advise on important emerging issues within assigned regional territory and on national assignments.


Public

Responsible for ensuring that, through demeanor and professional development, AWC continues to be respected and trusted by designers, regulators, and the wood products industry.

 

Industry

  • Capably represent  wood industry in technical forums.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with influential government and user groups.
  • Effectively represent wood products industry in regulation writing and other activities that can lead to regulations at state and local levels.
  • Assist members in product acceptance issues at the local, regional, state and federal level.
  • Assure that new and existing codes, standards, and regulations do not prohibit or inappropriately limit the use of wood products.
  • Serve other needs and interests of the membership as directed.
  • Represents the industry on technical, advisory, and other related committees as necessary. 

Media

Available as a spokesperson to various media on building issues.

 

 

Other organizations and entities

Responsible for ensuring that relations with other organizations and entities are consistent with, and advance, the interests of AWC and the industry.
