Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

GOAL: Reduce our industry’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 15 percent from 2005 to 2020.

Reducing our industry’s greenhouse gas emissions...

...is part of a global environmental concern and effort. International Paper man- aged and reduced greenhouse gas emissions at its facilities through its “Climate Leadership Initiative.” The program was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and others at the 2012 Climate Leadership Conference.

...helps us reach other AF&PA sustainability goals. Recovering paper for recycling keeps paper out of landfills – where it releases GHGs when it decomposes.

Improving energy efficiency leads to fewer GHG emissions resulting from the manufacturing process. Further, up to two-thirds of AF&PA members’ energy demand is met by carbon-neutral biomass.

Our industry has made consistent efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our manufacturing facilities.

Between 2005 and 2010, our members reduced their GHG emissions by 10.5 percent.

Carefully managed forests and forest products store approximately 10 percent of annual U.S. carbon dioxide emissions and thus play a pivotal role in reducing climate change impacts.
