WASHINGTON – The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) today announced its support of Manufacturing Day (MFG Day), to be held on Oct. 4, 2013.

MFG Day allows companies to open their doors and showcase American manufacturing.  These events are designed to help communities better understand the role manufacturing in society and the jobs they bring.   AF&PA represents an industry that is among the top 10 manufacturing employers in 47 states, employing nearly 900,000 men and women across the country.

“The forest products industry is a strong component to U.S. manufacturing, comprising 4.5 percent of manufacturing GDP,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman.  “We are supporting Manufacturing Day to promote the innovative production of paper and wood products that our members provide for the everyday lives of people across the country and around the world.”

“Paper and wood product manufacturers supply sustainable products that are used to convey information, provide shelter and package life’s necessities.  They are innovating to make wood-based nanomaterials, enabling light weight, high-strength packaging for goods of all types. In addition, our companies produce tissue, food packaging and supply wood-fiber pulp to manufacturers of textiles, electronics and other consumer goods,” said Harman.
