WASHINGTON – The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) is pleased that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) selected Agenda 2020’s proposal, Technologies for Advanced Manufacturing of Pulp and Paper Products, from among many entries in the highly competitive Advanced Manufacturing Technology Consortia (AMTech) program, a part of the U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Initiative.
The AMTech grant will enable Agenda2020 to develop six detailed, shared-vision roadmaps for research and development of breakthrough technologies for sustainable manufacturing of pulp and paper products and advanced bio-based materials.
“Establishing roadmaps to develop advanced technologies for pulp and paper manufacturing will encourage innovative approaches that can lead to dramatic improvements in sustainable manufacturing and global competitiveness,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman. “We are particularly pleased that the AMTech program recognizes the potential for national benefit and is encouraging advanced technologies for manufacturing pulp and paper products through this award.”
Agenda 2020, a non-profit organization established for scientific and educational purposes, promotes the development of new technologies for the paper and forest industry through collaborative R&D programs financed in part with public funds.
AF&PA supported Agenda 2020’s proposal and will continue to actively participate as the project moves forward.
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) serves to advance a sustainable U.S. pulp, paper, packaging, and wood products manufacturing industry through fact-based public policy and marketplace advocacy. AF&PA member companies make products essential for everyday life from renewable and recyclable resources and are committed to continuous improvement through the industry’s sustainability initiative - Better Practices, Better Planet 2020. The forest products industry accounts for approximately 4 percent of the total U.S. manufacturing GDP, manufactures approximately $210 billion in products annually, and employs nearly 900,000 men and women. The industry meets a payroll of approximately $50 billion annually and is among the top 10 manufacturing sector employers in 47 states.
