WASHINGTON – The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) presented the Greenhill School, in Addison, Texas, with its 2014 School Recycling Award for Creativity. The award, which recognizes outstanding paper recycling programs, was presented at Greenhill’s end of school year assembly.
Greenhill School’s creative endeavors include videos featuring kindergarten students that educate the school community on what can and cannot be recycled; student-led assemblies with question and answer sessions on recycling; and handmade posters that are hung around the school buildings with concise information regarding recycling and what is accepted.
“On behalf of AF&PA, I am proud to honor Greenhill School’s recycling efforts with this year’s School Recycling Award for Creativity. Their initiatives deeply engage students, creating a bottom-up approach to paper recycling,” said Bobby Pirtle, supply manager at RockTenn Company’s Dallas Mill, who presented the award.
Greenhill School’s recycling program is a campus-wide endeavor with recycling bins in every office and classroom. Greenhill did a trash audit to determine what was ending up in the regular trash and what was ending up in the recycling bin. The results enabled them to improve their paper recycling program.
“I am very proud of our students' creative paper recycling initiatives and we are all grateful to AF&PA for acknowledging our efforts through this wonderful award,” said Greenhill’s Head of School Scott Griggs.
AF&PA recently announced that 63.5 percent of all paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling in 2013. Recycling programs such as Greenhill School’s, combined with the recycling efforts of millions of Americans each day, help drive the industry toward its goal to exceed 70 percent paper recovery for recycling by 2020.
