​American Eagle Paper Mill's Project Phoenix

American Eagle Paper Mills commissioned Project Phoenix to increase efficiency and reduce water use at their Tyrone, Pennsylvania, mill – one of the oldest working paper mills in the United States. Infrastructure updates resulted in an 83 percent reduction in total daily river and watershed water withdrawal; a 91 percent reduction in daily water consumption; and an 18.1 percent reduction in process water effluent per ton of paper produced.

Georgia-Pacific's Protecting Endangered Forests and Special Areas Project

May 2017 - Georgia-Pacific’s Protecting Endangered Forests and Special Areas project mapped and ranked woodlands within more than a dozen Southern states, identifying 4.5 million acres that met the criteria as endangered forests and special areas. Georgia-Pacific will only buy fiber from these areas in unique situations where active forest management is needed to improve habitat for endangered, rare and/or vulnerable species.

​​WestRock's Safety First, Safety Always Video

April 2017 - To achieve a higher rate of employee safety engagement, improve safety culture and morale, and reduce injuries and costs, WestRock produced the Safety First, Safety Always video as part of their 2015 safety strategy. The video includes three modules: Speak Up for Safety; Plan for Safety; and Engaged for Safety.

Procter & Gamble's Water Conservation Response Project

March 2017 - Procter & Gamble’s facility in Oxnard, California implemented five distinct projects that led the site to deliver a cumulative absolute fresh water consumption reduction of 28 percent between 2012 and 2015 and set new site and business records for low levels of water consumption.

Sappi North America's Hood Heat Recovery Project at Somerset

February 2017 - Sappi's Somerset Mill in Maine reduced its energy-associated footprint and costs through updates that enable the mill to capture wasted heat and use it to heat water for the manufacturing process. The modifications have resulted in lower operating costs, fossil fuel use, purchased electricity, waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

Dart Container Employee Recycling Center

January 2017 - Dart Container opened a drive-through recycling facility at its Mason, Michigan headquarters, where employees have access to free, convenient paper recycling. Regular curbside residential recycling services are uncommon, and often require payment. In its first three months, the facility recycled nearly 93,000 pounds of paper products.

The 2016 AF&PA Sustainability Award Winners

November 2016 - AF&PA presented its 2016 Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 Sustainability Awards at AF&PA’s annual meeting on Friday, Nov. 11 in Cary, North Carolina. Dart Container, Sappi North America, WestRock Company, Procter & Gamble and Georgia-Pacific were honored for outstanding sustainability initiatives.

Domtar's K-Lime

October 2016 - Domtar eliminated materials being sent to landfill by creating K-Lime, a substitute for traditional fertilizer that consists of byproducts of their manufacturing process. K-Lime is all natural and works better than traditional fertilizer, with farmers reporting higher crop yields, and is provided by Domtar to farmers at a third of the cost.

International Paper's Pensacola Mill / Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) Partnership

June 2016 - Through the partnership, International Paper's containerboard mill in Pensacola, Florida receives treated effluent from ECUA that it uses in its industrial processes. This allowed International Paper to reduce its freshwater consumption, while ECUA has found a beneficial outlet for its treated effluent.

Resolute Forest Products' Working Towards Zero Incidents Initiativeresolute

May 2016 - A multi-disciplinary task force at Resolute took the initiative to design a safer, watertight, more comfortable, breathable chemical protective suit that is appropriate for all mill-related working requirements. In addition, the new suits can be used for at least a year, as opposed to the previous disposable suits, of which employees used and discarded ​many per month. 

Seaman Paper’s Soft Steps Forward Initiativeseaman-logo

April 2016 - As part of the Soft Steps Forward Initiative, Seaman Paper committed to decrease their purchased fuel and electricity dependency. Seaman Paper now produces 97 percent of their steam requirements from carbon-neutral biomass, and installed a backpressure turbine that runs on steam to meet their electricity needs. These measures helped decrease Seaman Paper’s total energy cost despite the sharp increases in oil and electricity costs over the past decade.

WestRock's Covington Power Island Projectwestrock

March 2016 - WestRock’s Covington Power Island Project uses carbon-neutral self generated and purchased biomass towestrock generate clean renewable electricity  at their Covington, Virginia paper mill. It has enabled the mill to put net power to the grid, greatly reduce coal use, greenhouse gas emissions and decrease freshwater usage as well as the generation of wastewater.

Evergreen Packaging's On-Packaging Recycle Use Project

February 2016 - Evergreen developed and implemented a recycle logo tracking system for the cartons they produce. This information is used to work with customers to include the logo on their cartons and communicate to consumers that those cartons are recyclable,Evergreen communicate to consumers that those cartons are recyclable, increasing recovery.

Domtar's Marlboro FSC Partnership Project

January 2016 - Through the Marlboro FSC Partnership, Domtar covers certification costs and pays a premium to receive certified fiber, and landowners receive advice and support in getting their wood certified. Through partnerships such as these, Domtar is getting closer to its goal of using 20 percent FSC-certified material in its pulp and paper mills by 2020.

Verso Corporation's 2014 Sustainability Report


December 2015 - Verso Corporation's 2014 Sustainability Report focuses on four key areas: caring for people, using resources responsibly, manufacturing efficiently and serving customers. Resolute Forest Products' New Sustainability Section on its Corporate Websiteresolute

October 2015 - The new web pages provide detailed information on Resolute’s efforts to balance the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic.  The section contains 2013-2014 sustainability performance data, fulfilling the requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) G4 reporting guidelines.  The GRI framework is considered the gold standard of balanced, transparent sustainability reporting, and Resolute is proud to be among the first in the forest products industry to meet the most recent reporting standards. KapStone’s Sustainability Progresskapstone

September 2015 - KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation recently released its 2014 sustainability report, which continues to demonstrate the company's progress towards meeting its 2020 sustainability goals. Notable highlights include achieving 100 percent of the goal to have SFI® and PEFC™ Chain-of-Custody certification for all mill division operations, and, safety being KapStone’s most important value, a 29 percent reduction in workforce injuries since 2010. Sonoco's Sustainability Star Awards Program

June 2015 - Sonoco's recycling business, Sonoco Recycling, administers the Sustainability Star Awards Program on three levels: gold recognizes facilities that achieve 99 percent landfill diversion; silver recognizes facilities that achieve 95 percent landfill diversion; and bronze recognizes facilities that made significant waste reduction achievements. Sonoco Recycling is a global recycling leader, collecting more than 3 million tons of old corrugated containers, various grades of paper, and other commodities annually.

The 2015 ICFPA Sustainability Progress Report

May 2015 - The International Council of Forest and Paper Associations' (ICFPA) 2015 Sustainability Progress Report shows improvements on a range of sustainability indicators and focuses on the industry's contributions toward a green economy. Forest and paper industry associations from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Europe, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States contributed to the 2015 report, which is available here.

AF&PA Members' Sustainability Progress

March 2015 - In case you missed it, AF&PA's Sustainability Highlights Brochure and Commitment to Sustainability Video give a succinct overview of the progress AF&PA members have made on the Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability goals.

The six goals focus on increasing paper recycling, improving energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable forestry practices, improving workplace safety and reducing water use.

January 2015 - Resolute Forest Products received The New Economy Magazine's Clean Tech Award in the Best Forest and Paper Solutions category for 2014.

The New Economy's Clean Tech Awards honor and recognize companies around the world whose ideas, achievements, projects and solutions reflect innovation, long-term vision and leadership. August 2014 - When AF&PA was considering which sustainability goals to adopt for its Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability initiative, industry leaders provided important guidance at the outset of the process: make sure that the goals promote progress in each of the economic, social, and environmental pillars of sustainability.  While that guidance engendered discussion for some of the proposed goals, it was easy to see that an energy efficiency goal furthers economic, social, and environmental progress. AF&PA Recycling Awards

Sappi Showcases Sustainability Leadership with Notable Industry Research

December 2013 - Sappi Fine Paper North America’s white paper series, eQ Insights, addresses common stereotypes and misconceptions by examining important sustainability issues in the paper industry.

In the latest edition, Sappi covers the life cycle assessment (LCA) of paper products, providing thought-provoking context and sharing their findings to help readers rethink their current analysis processes.

2013 Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 Sustainability Award Winners 

November 2013 - Five AF&PA company members were awarded for their sustainability initiatives.

Leadership in Sustainability awards were given to KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation’s Longview Mill (Energy Efficiency/Greenhouse Gas Reduction); RockTenn (Paper Recovery for Recycling); Domtar (Safety, and Sustainable Forest Management); and Georgia-Pacific Brunswick Cellulose Operation (Water). Graphic Packaging International won the Innovation in Sustainability award.

Domtar showcases progress in 2012 Sustainable Growth Report

October 2013 - Domtar Corporation’s 2012 Sustainable Growth Report highlights the company’s best year on record for health and safety performance, over 76 percent renewable energy use, decreased greenhouse gas emissions intensity, and increased certified fiber use.

Domtar tracks progress through a framework of 35 key performance indicators, including increasing production efficiency, reducing environmental footprint, promoting employee development, serving customers better and contributing more effectively to host communities.

Sonoco releases Corporate Responsibility Report

September 2013 - Sonoco released its 2012-2013 Corporate Responsibility Report in July, showing continued progress towards its global sustainability targets.

Sonoco uses Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Guidelines, a voluntary framework of principles and indicators, to measure and report their economic, environmental and social performance.

International Paper Releases 2012 Sustainability Report

August 2013 - International Paper released its 2012 Sustainability Report on June 27, reporting progress against its voluntary goals including certified fiber use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions, and water quality improvement.

The 12 environmental and social goals set by International Paper in 2011 are targeted to be achieve by 2020. Using a 2010 baseline, the company is reporting goal progress in its report.

Monadnock Paper Mills recognized for commitment to social responsibility and sustainable innovation

July 2013 - Monadnock Paper Mills, Inc. was recently inducted into the New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsibility (NHBSR) Cornerstone Hall of Fame.

Monadnock Paper Mills, a prior winner of the NHBSR Cornerstone Award, was honored for reducing its impact on the environment and making a positive contribution to the surrounding community. Monadnock also received a citation from the governor for its dedication to and promotion of corporate social responsibility among the greater business community of New Hampshire.
