Spotlight in Brief: 2020 Sustainability Award Winner for Safety

Leadership in Sustainability Award: Safety

Member Spotlight: Clearwater Paper

The Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability initiative recognizes the three essential pillars of sustainability, economic, environmental and social, interdependent factors that collectively support long-term viability, growth and improvement. People are at the heart of the paper and wood products industry, which is why the health and safety of workers is a top priority for our industry, and it’s one of the Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 goals.

Clearwater Paper implemented an enterprise-wide Environmental Health & Safety Excellence strategy focused on five key foundations to reduce and eliminate safety impacts to employees, contractors and communities.

These foundations include leadership and commitment, worksite analysis and controls, continuous improvement, employee ownership, and training and communication.

The process helps evaluate risks along with ensuring minimal potential for EHS incidents. Clearwater Paper has seen immediate improvement in specific safety targets and employee engagement – each site met their 20 percent improvement goal within the first year.
